Join us for a special evening of movement, led by Kelsey Dovico! We’ll explore the origins, movements, choreography, music, and expression of Raqs sharqi, known widely as Belly Dance. Belly Dance is one of the oldest recorded dance forms in the Middle East and Levant! All levels are welcome; no dance experience required.


This evening of dance is co-hosted by our friends at SHE RECOVERS, as part of their Movement = Medicine fundraising campaign.  Enjoy a special appearance by writer & coach Kelly Fitzgerald Junco to introduce this incredible recovery organization to The Phoenix community.

About our partner, SHE RECOVERS:

SHE RECOVERS FOUNDATION is a global grassroots movement and non-profit public charity with more than 325,000 women in or seeking recovery from substance use disorders, other behavioral health issues and/or life challenges. This lifeline organization connects women through its virtual platforms and in-person community networks, provides resources, and supports women to develop their own holistic recovery patchworks.

During Recovery Month and until October 8, they highlight the importance of movement with the  fundraising campaign Movement = Medicine. In honor of movement as a vital tool of recovery, participants are invited to move for 108 minutes or 108 repetitions and fundraise at least $108. Movement can be anything —dance, hike, run, cycle, jump rope— get creative!

Representing SHE RECOVERS today, Kelly Fitzgerald Junco is a writer, certified coach, and new mom based in Southwest Florida who is best known for her personal blog The Adventures of a Sober Señorita. Her work has been published across the web including sites like The Huffington Post, Thought Catalog, Ravishly, and The Fix. She is currently writing a memoir. Kelly is on the Marketing Team for the SHE RECOVERS Foundation and in her free time enjoys soccer and CrossFit.

Meet Your Dance Instructor: 

Kelsey Dovico is an advocate for and ally with the recovery community. She serves The Phoenix as a senior program coordinator for Detroit and national virtual instructor, through these roles bringing forth innovative programming to serve sober community-building both in person and in virtual spaces. Kelsey’s journey with raqs sharqi, or Egyptian belly dance, began in 2015. A formidable excursion outside her comfort zone, Kelsey attended her first class after a professor and semi-professional dancer suggested the experience of learning belly dance was healing in mind, body, and spirit for people who had experienced gendered violence. Seven years later, Kelsey now performs semi-professionally and has hosted virtual belly dance workshops for Phoenix. Kelsey is passionate about learning and carrying the art of belly dance within its Middle Eastern, Levantine, and North African cultural contexts.
